Employee Picks: National Book Lovers Day

August 9th is National Book Lovers Day. To celebrate, we’ve listed some of our employees’ favorite novels and why they chose them. Check out all the selections below.

Brant Brown, President & COO | Good to Great – Jim Collins

An excellent read that highlights important business concepts and philosophies employed by successful companies.

Shawn Riely, Director – Private Capital | What it Takes: Lessons in the Pursuit of Excellence Stephen A. Schwarzman

This was an excellent and easy read on philosophy from one of today’s greatest builders of real estate portfolios.

Steven Minick, Property Controller | At Dawn We Slept – Gordon Prange

Decades after the attack that plunged America into WWII, At Dawn We Slept remains the greatest account of Pearl Harbor ever written. The book is often cited today when people want to point out how dangerous it can be to underestimate an enemy and ignore facts.

Lorraine Winser, Director – Human Resources | Silent Patient Alex Michaelides

The premise of this book is fantastic. It’s immediately engaging. The ending is surprising, and the way that crucial scenes in the book play out are very well done. For most thrillers, the ending is the make-it-or-break it aspect of the story, and this one is pretty memorable. This book sparked my love for mystery thrillers and very few books have topped this twisty ending!

Amy Herdine, Assistant Controller – Multifamily | To Kill a Mockingbird – Harper Lee

This novel is a great reminder that you never know what a person’s life is behind closed doors, so don’t believe what everyone tells you and a little kindness can go a long way.

Phil Copulsky, Senior Associate – Private Capital | In The Garden of Beasts – Erik Larson

This book was a microcosm of the world’s ignorance to the rising threat of Nazi Germany after Hitler took power. The story follows the U.S. ambassador to Germany and his family as they are living in Berlin before the start of the war. It was a very gripping read that became difficult to put down.

Katie Swan, Senior Executive Assistant | This is How It Always Is – Laurie Frankel

An eye opening and incredibly touching story about a very special child, a family, parenting, acceptance, and fierce love.

Peter Hsiao, Associate – Marketing | Shoe Dog – Phil Knight

The novel shares incredible stories and the humble beginning of one of the world’s largest companies. Phil Knight is a talented storyteller and businessman, and his story gave me a newfound appreciation for Nike.

Saidakhror Mukhtorov, Associate – Asset Management | 1984 – George Orwel

1984 centers on the consequences of totalitarianism, mass surveillance, and repressive regimentation of persons and behaviors within society. The novel is supported by a strong love story where the protagonist has to conceal his feelings because they are prohibited by the oppressive regime.

Maria Orozco, Accounts Payable Specialist | The Book of Lost Names – Kristin Harmel

There is suspense, mystery and romance in this book with a huge surprise twist too! This novel lures you in and keeps the pages turning as your curiosity grows. I can’t say too much about it without giving anything away but it is definitelty worth the read! HIGHLY recommend.

Sandy Linn, Lease Administrator | A Bookshop in Berlin – Francoise Frenkel

This book is about a Polish woman who faced extreme difficulties while in Berlin running a French bookstore at the onslaught of WWII. It reveals the trials and tribulations she faced as a Jew during the subsequent Nazi invasion as she fled to France for what she thought would be a safe haven.

Andrew Matheson, Staff Accountant | The Dichotomy of Leadership – Jocko Willink & Leif Babin

Reading this gave me a new view of leadership on both the corporate and tactical level and how you can take experience from one and apply it to the other.
